SUPPORTING SACRED HEART SCHOOL, NAIVASHA, KENYA DREAM FOR SOMETHING BETTER
A dream for something better, Wangari Ceclia
“Epic” fundraiser
In June this year, a group of intrepid (foolhardy?) supporters intend to walk the ‘Northampton Round’ in aid of the Karuri School Project.
This is a truly epic endurance 55 mile walk along roads, footpaths and bridleways through villages surrounding Northampton, to be completed in a 24 hour period. The walk starts and ends in Brixworth. Exactly how many individuals will be attempting this is not yet clear. More details, including how to sponsor the walkers , will be outlined in the Spring newsletter.
News from the school
Wangari writes:
“It hasn’t been an easy term. Some of our teachers left at the end of August for better paid jobs in the National schools. We had to find new teachers, not always successfully, and I have been helping to prepare students for the National exams in subjects such as English and Home Science.
In 2019, we took in some children from the streets who had never been to school. We taught them one to one and took them through the years to Year 8. They needed so much help and I myself walked with them on their education journey.
So, National exam preparation and ensuring that we have enough food and firewood has taken precedence over the completion of the new building.
Kenya has also been badly hit by flooding; we thank God that the school has not been badly affected this time but we will need to check the gutters on all buildings.
I decided to do 21 days of fasting and prayer during Advent and prayed for all of our supporters by name. Without you we could not have achieved so much. Thank you and God Bless each one of you.
Annual food provision and Christmas day out
Every year, Wangari tries to buy as much maize and beans (the staple diet at the school) as possible when prices are at their lowest. Rising costs makes this harder each year, but thanks to some specific donations and a Grant from the David Young’s Charity we were able to fund sufficient food and firewood for the year ahead.
On a lighter note, individuals also funded a Christmas day out treat for the children at the Nakuru National Park; the photos here show that they had a really great time and a bit of relief from their arduous daily schedule.
Exam results
This year, 33 pupils sat their National exams; our school has again emerged as one of the top schools in Kenya. Among those successes are:
- Germie Mabira, picked from the Nairobi slums and now joining Moi Forces Academy on a scholarship.
- Elizabeth Vaati, an orphan from the Makuru slums, has joined Kenya High School on a scholarship from one of the Kenyan banks.
Other children have also performed extremely well and we are so proud of all their hard work.
