Supporting Sacred Heart School, Naivasha, KenyA dream for something better

A dream for something better, Wangari Cecilia

Dear Friends,

It’s approximately one year since my last visit to England. I was delighted to have an opportunity
to visit your church and to share with you the charity work l do, caring for the orphans and
destitute children in Kenya. Thank you to all the priests for allowing me to visit your Parish.

Dear friends, thank you for sacrificing yourselves to make a difference in the lives of the poor and
destitute orphans. Thank you for accommodating these children and giving them hope, home and
a decent life. A cup of porridge is always available on the table every day 6.30am, lunch is always
ready at exactly 1pm, a cup of tea every day at 10am and supper at 6.30pm. You are all behind
this power. God bless you abundantly.

The first 15 children that we took in 2011 completed Year 8 2014 and joined secondary school 2015. Out of those 15 children, 11 are going to join university, while 4 are going to join colleges.
It’s amazing. Thank you so much. Last year November our year 8 performed excellently well in
the national primary exam. Simon and Mercy, from our last newsletter, are off to join the best
national high school in Kenya.

Thank you dear friends; we are very proud of you. God bless you all.

Rebuilding after floods: Latest Update

The lengthy project to rebuild the dining and kitchen area is nearing completion, following the devastating floods of last year. The cost has been over £12k, the biggest single outlay we have made since the project’s inception. This has only been possible due to some remarkable donations from our supporters. This building is very much at the heart of the school community, so it was incredibly important to see it rebuilt. The children cannot thank you enough.

If you can help with a donation towards labour costs, or indeed sponsorship of a Sacred Heart School pupil, please go to our Virgin Money page or donate direct via John Sleet.

A message of real hope: Karuri at the WI Annual Meeting

Karuri Committee member Jill Wadsworth addressed 500 attendees of the WI Annual Federation in Cambridgeshire in April.

A decade ago, Wangari spoke to the WI on her vision for a school in Kenya; ten years on, Jill shared the fantastic progress made on that vision, achieved in part thanks to the support of the WI. Children rescued from slums with absolutely nothing have been given food, medical care and most importantly, the chance to learn.

Walking on the wild (and windy!) side this June

We’re lucky enough to have some dedicated fundraisers behind us, without whom the School would not survive. One such person is Jacqueline Jones who’ll be bravely undertaking a Wing Walk in aid of the Karuri School Project on 22 June! If you’d like to sponsor Jacqueline, contact John Sleet (j.sleet@hotmail.co.uk) for a form – all donations are gratefully received.

Good luck Jacqueline!

Karuri on the airwaves

We’re always looking for ways to get the word about The Sacred Heart School and the wonderful students it helps; Susan Marchant shared our story with the listeners of BBC Radio Cambridgeshire last month. We hope the feature raised awareness as we seek to expand the School, offering the chance of an education to more desperate children living in the slums of Kenya.

Fundraiser: the entire 88km Northampton Round in a day - COMPLETED.
